JobKeeper Payments

JobKeeper Payment - available to businesses and self employed individuals.

The good news is that the federal govt has just announced a JobKeeper program to encourage businesses to retain their employees. Employers can claim $1500 a fortnight for each eligible employee from 30 March 2020 for a maximum period of 6 months.

Employees are therefor guaranteed a minimum of $1500 before tax per fortnight.

Most small business employers will be eligible if their turnover will be reduced by more than 30% relative to a comparable period (of at least 1 month) a year ago.

The employer must have been in an employment relationship with eligible employees as at 1 March 2020 and confirm that they are currently employed.

Nor for profit organisations and self -employed individuals that meet the turnover tests can also apply for JobKeeper payments.

Eligible employees must be currently employed full time, part time or long terms casual (including those stood down), were employed at 1 March 2020, at least 16 y/o and not in receipt of a JobKeeper payment from another employer. Receipt of this payment my affect employees eligibility for other payments from Services Australia.

Employers can register their interest from today at ato.gov.au and there will be a subsequent online application.

The not-so-good news is that the first payments won't be received until the first week of May - 4 to 5 weeks away.

This is a tragedy for businesses which have worked hard for years to build a profitable base only to see it swept away almost overnight. The businesses which have had to close by prescription are in the front line and it is likely that as the economy progressively contracts we will see a second and third wave of business closures. It is very important to face facts dispassionately and make informed decisions. Read More
